Dr. Teresa Granillo
Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Teresa Granillo is the Chief Executive Officer of AVANCE. As CEO, she sets the vision and strategic plan for the organization and provides guidance and oversight to daily operations. She engages key stakeholders and advocates and elevates the mission of AVANCE. A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Granillo earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and advanced degrees from the University of Michigan, including Master of Science degrees in Social Work and Psychology, and a dual Ph.D. in Social Work and Psychology.
Prior to AVANCE, Dr. Granillo served six years as Executive Director of Con Mi MADRE, another two-generation organization that supports young Latinas on the path to higher education. Before Con Mi MADRE, Dr. Granillo was a tenure-track professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Steve Hicks School of Social Work, where she received the Lora Lee Teaching Award.
Dr. Granillo is also active in her community, serving on the National Advisory Council for the Hogg Mental Health Foundation and the Board of Directors of UnidosUS. Driven by her personal experiences, she is a passionate advocate for education and the well-being of Latina/o children and families. Her leadership has been recognized in many arenas including being recognized with an Austin 40 Under 40 award. As a Latina raised by a single mother, Dr. Granillo knows firsthand how education can end the cycle of poverty and has dedicated her career to ensuring that all individuals have access to high-quality education.
Elida Gonzales
Chief Financial Officer
Elida serves as Chief Financial Officer of AVANCE. Elida joined AVANCE in 1998 and has spent most of her career in leadership roles in accounting, finance and business development. She was born and raised in the community where AVANCE began and has seen first-hand how the Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP) has impacted the lives of those in her community. She earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from St. Mary’s University and her Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Sonia Dominguez
President
Sonia Dominguez is the President of AVANCE. In addition to overseeing administrative functions and daily operations, Sonia directs the development and implementation of strategies that ensure AVANCE employees thrive and organizational goals are met, strengthening the organization’s ability to carry out its mission. Sonia began her career as a middle school math teacher in El Paso, TX, went on to serve in various leadership roles in both urban and rural public school districts in Texas, and led systems-change efforts at a collective impact organization in Central Texas. Sonia earned bachelor's and master’s degrees in math education from the University of Texas at El Paso. She is the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants, and her personal experiences as a Latina, a Head Start graduate, and a first-generation college graduate from a Texas border town inform her work and contribute to her passion to advance equitable outcomes for Latino families from under-resourced communities.
Alex Chandler
Chief Communications Officer
Alex is the Chief Communications Officer for AVANCE Inc. As a first-generation college student, Alex is passionate about the AVANCE mission and believes in the power of education as the great equalizer and wants to see the systemic inequities eliminated. Through his role as CCO, Alex is responsible for leading the organization’s communications, marketing, branding, and community engagement efforts. Alex has more than 15 years’ experience in communications and marketing for educational non-profits. Before joining AVANCE, Alex worked for WGTE PBS, Trellis (formerly Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation), Austin ISD, and E3 Alliance, leading various marketing and community initiatives while also doing graphic design and video and photography. Alex received his Bachelor of Visual Communication Technology from Bowling Green State in Bowling Green, Ohio, and studied art, photography, and graphic design at the Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy.
Melanie Brewster
Senior Director of Head Start & Early Head Start Partnerships
In her role as the Senior Director of Head Start & Early Head Start Partnerships for AVANCE Inc., Melanie oversees the organization’s HS/EHS programs in the Rio Grande Valley in addition to working closely with the program team to integrate PCEP into HS/EHS operations. Before joining the AVANCE team, Melanie spent 10 years with Acelero Learning and Shine Early Learning in different roles that provided her a wealth of experience in the management of HS/EHS programs, including monitoring and compliance, family and community engagement, curriculum implementation, and training and professional development. Melanie holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Temple University and a Master of Arts in Urban Studies and Community Development from Eastern University.
Ana Lorena Carrasco

Ana Lorena Carrasco is a passionate advocate for families and education, currently serving as Executive Director of AVANCE North Texas. A proud AVANCE alumna herself, Ana’s journey, from program participant and parent to organizational leader, embodies the transformative power of the two-generation approach she now champions.
Before assuming her current role, Ana Lorena served as the Senior Director of Curriculum and Implementation at the AVANCE National Office, where she led the development, review, and improvement of AVANCE’s curriculum, programs, and services nationwide. Prior to that, she spent more than a decade at AVANCE North Texas serving the community in a variety of roles, gaining deep, hands-on experience that continues to inform her leadership today.
Ana holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico de Saltillo in Coahuila, Mexico. She has also completed the Executive Leadership and Performance Leadership programs at Cornell University, the Professional Certificate in Online Curriculum Development from National University, the Applied Business Science–AI Prompting program through Texas Executive Education at UT Austin and the Women in Leadership certificate from Southern Methodist University (SMU).
Under Ana’s leadership, AVANCE North Texas continues to walk alongside families to achieve social and economic justice, helping parents become their children’s first teachers and creating equitable pathways to opportunity. Her leadership style blends analytical thinking with deep empathy, fostering collaboration, staff growth, and innovative partnerships that expand access to education, mental well-being, and economic mobility.
Ana Lorena is a proud graduate of the AVANCE Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP), which she completed alongside her youngest son, a personal experience that continues to inspire her every day. Outside of her professional life, Ana enjoys exercising with friends, baking, and sharing desserts with her family and loved ones.
Luz Flores
AVANCE-Houston - Executive Director
As Executive Director for AVANCE-Houston, Luz Flores has nearly 30 years of leadership experience with national nonprofit organizations. Throughout her career, Luz has successfully steered organizations, such as the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto, the United Way of Greater Houston and SER Jobs for Progress, through periods of substantial growth and transition. Luz joined AVANCE-Houston in 2009, serving in several management positions, and assumed her current role in 2016. Originally from Puerto Rico, Luz holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Non-Profit Management from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio Texas, and a Human Resources Certificate from Rice University.
Susan Thompson
AVANCE-San Antonio - Executive Director
Thompson brings 28 years of leadership experience in nonprofit business, social services, and healthcare sectors. She most recently served as the Vice President – Grants, Programs, and Services at the San Antonio Area Foundation. Susan is actively involved with a wide range of professional and nonprofit organizations, including the Masters Leadership Program, John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. A native San Antonian, Thompson holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology/English from The University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Business Administration from Rice University.
Cristina Garza
AVANCE-Austin - Executive Director
Prior to joining AVANCE-Austin as Executive Director, Cristina served as Director of Social Impact for the Mission Economic Development Corporation (EDC) where she curated and led all STEAM and entrepreneurship initiatives. She was named Code.Org's 2019 Champion of Computer Science. She is also a 2017 Next City Vanguard and named by CityLab Latino one of the Top 20 Young Civic Leaders of 2017. Before her career in economic development, Cristina worked in education at museums in New York City including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rubin of Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Historical Society, and the Brooklyn Museum. She holds a BA from New York University, and an MA from Syracuse University where she received the Florence Graduate Fellowship.
Vanessa Maldonado
AVANCE-North Texas - Executive Director
Vanessa Maldonado is the Executive Director of AVANCE-North Texas. Maldonado joined AVANCE-North Texas with a degree in nonprofit management from St. Edward’s University and more than a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership and development. Most recently, she served as the Chief Engagement Officer for Easterseals, a nonprofit organization that promotes independence and creates opportunities for people with disabilities. In this previous role, Maldonado managed the organization’s fundraising activities, retail operations, communications, marketing, and advocacy in Central and North Texas.
Lissette Rodriguez
As Managing Director, Portfolio Strategy & Management for Blue Meridian, Lissette provides strategic and executional leadership on critical business priorities and leads innovation efforts to expand Blue Meridian’s work. She explores new philanthropic investment opportunities, leads due diligence on potential Blue Meridian investees and manages relationships with current investees. Prior to joining Blue Meridian, Lissette served as Vice President and Chief Program Officer of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation and as Managing Director of PropelNext, EMCF’s initiative to sharpen the skills and advance the effectiveness of promising youth-serving nonprofits. Before joining the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation in 2010, she spent 12 years, the last six as Senior Vice President for Field Development, at YouthBuild USA. Her previous experience also includes roles as a senior program officer and director of the Fund for the Homeless at the Boston Foundation; as the founding executive director of Casa Nueva Vida, a shelter for homeless Latina women and their children; and as a contributing editor of Nonprofit Quarterly. Lissette holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Boston University and a master’s in organizational development from Fielding Graduate University.
Dr. Robert H. McCallister
Robert H. (Bob) McCallister graduated from Brown University in 1972 with a PhD in Geological Sciences. He was a fellow at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and a professor of Geosciences at Purdue University until 1981, at which time he joined ExxonMobil’s Upstream Research Company. Until his retirement from an executive position with ExxonMobil in 2003, Bob held several jobs at ExxonMobil, including Sr. Technology Advisor to the Executive Committees of the Exploration and Research Companies. Currently, he serves on the United Way of Greater Houston’s Bright Beginnings Advisory Committee, is on the Board of Lone Star College Foundation, and is a member of the Executive Committee and Board of the Children’s Museum of Houston. Before joining the National Board of AVANCE, Bob served as an active member of the AVANCE-Houston Board of Directors.
Ron Oran
Ron is a litigation attorney in Houston, Texas. His experience is in commercial litigation, particularly as it relates to disputes involving fiduciary duties or contracts for the purchase, sale, or operation of companies. Ron is a former chairman of the board of the AVANCE-Houston Chapter and a former treasurer of the National Board. Ron is also a member of the community impact committee for the United Way of Greater Houston and the chairman of the board of American Leadership Forum—Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter. Ron holds a BA degree from Northwestern State University, and a master’s degree in philosophy and a law degree from Tulane University.
Manuel G. Berrelez
Manuel is a Partner with the law firm of Paul Hastings LLP in Dallas. He is a trial and regulatory enforcement lawyer whose practice focuses on business disputes, financial regulatory matters, and data privacy and cybersecurity matters. Manuel has been named a “Top Latino Lawyer” by Latino Leaders Magazine, and he has also been named one of 20 "Extraordinary Minority Lawyers in Texas" by Texas Lawyers Magazine. Manuel has been involved with numerous educated-related activities including service on the boards of the Dallas Winds, Educate Dallas, and the Dallas Hispanic Law Foundation. Manuel grew up in Pearsall, Texas, where he attended Head Start as a young child and quarterbacked his high school football team. He holds a B.A. from Yale College and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
Hilda C. Galvan
Hilda is the Partner-in-Charge of the Dallas office of Jones Day. Hilda is a nationally recognized trial lawyer who focuses on complex intellectual property litigation. She places a high priority on community service, serving as Chair Elect of Texas Women’s Foundation, and as Trustee of the University of Texas School of Law, SMU Lyle School of Engineering , and the Dallas Hispanic Law Foundation, among others. Hilda was named one of "The Most Powerful Business Leaders" in Dallas-Fort Worth by D CEO. Hilda holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and a J.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
Marlo Michaeli
Marlo is an Audit Partner with KPMG in Dallas, Texas. She began her career with KPMG, and after brief stints at Fidelity National and Arum Technologies, she returned to KPMG as one of the leaders in the audit practice. She was an active member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, Women in Business and serves on the Board of Levine Academy. Marlo’s family was one of the original settlers in New Mexico, and her mother is of both Mexican and Native American heritage. Marlo received her BBA in Accounting from the Red McCombs School of Business and the University of Texas, Austin.
Dr. Claudia Kramer Santamaria

Dr. Kramer Santamaria is the former Director of the Anita Uphaus Early Childhood Center, an early childhood dual language school for pre-k and Kindergarten students in Austin, Texas. Dr. Kramer Santamaria has over 20 years of experience in education ranging from being an elementary school Principal, to overseeing teacher training and education, to being the Director of Parent Programs. She is bilingual, and earned her Doctorate Degree in Education from Texas State University, a Master’s Degree in Administration from Tarleton State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Bilingual Education from St. Edward’s University.
Sofia Ramón
Sofia Ramón is a Founding Member and Co-Manager for Ramon Worthington Nicolas & Cantu, PLLC, a majority women and minority owned (NAMWOLF) law firm devoted to civil litigation, including complex commercial litigation. She has been practicing law for almost three decades and proudly serves on the State Bar of Texas Litigation Council. She was inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and serves as the current Texas Association of Defense Counsel (TADC) Vice President of Membership. Sofia currently serves as a Director for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA of Hidalgo) and was previously involved in South Texas College’s Puente Mentor Program, designed to encourage the continued education and leadership development of academically underserved students.
Dr. Luzelma G. Canales

Dr. Luzelma G. Canales, formerly a member of BranchED’s Board of Directors, is BranchED's Chief of Staff. Dr. Canales served as a community college and university administrator for over twenty-five years. She led numerous institutional community college national reform initiatives including Achieving the Dream, Breaking Through, and several with Excelencia in Education.
Luzelma's experience includes building sophisticated models to leverage existing funding streams to build sustainability for innovative, effective programs and services. Prior to coming to BranchED, Dr. Canales served as the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Success for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). She served as executive director of RGV FOCUS, a collective impact initiative designed to transform college readiness, access, and success across the four-county Rio Grande Valley region.
Dr. Melanie Johnson
Dr. Melanie Johnson is the President and CEO of Collaborative for Children. Prior to this role, she served as the president and CEO of the John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science (The Health Museum) in Houston. Dr. Johnson also previously served as the director of the education department at NASA’s Space Center Houston, head of the department for development education at Galveston College, and director of faculty development for The Art Institute of Houston. Dr. Johnson earned a BA in International Business/French from Auburn University, a Master of Hospitality Management from the University of Houston, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas Southern University. She has received numerous awards for educational and professional excellence, and was named one of the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce Thought Leaders.
Ryan Ramirez
As Vice President of IT Infrastructure and International for Lockheed Martin Corporation, Ryan Ramirez leads the corporation's information technology infrastructure team and portfolio and provides global IT oversight. His more than 25 years of IT experience ranges from managing and transforming infrastructure to leading application development for global and enterprise operations. Previously, Ryan served as VP of Infrastructure and Operations at Kimberly Clark and as Sr. Director of Global IT Infrastructure and Operations at Avery Dennison. He also served in a variety of global IT leadership roles for manufacturer and retailer, VF Corporation. Ryan earned his M.B.A., with a concentration in International Business, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Bachelor's degree in Electronic Systems Engineering from ITESM at Monterrey, N.L. Mexico.
Maria del Rosario Garza
Rosario is the Parent Policy Council Chair for the AVANCE Head Start (HS) and Early Head Start (EHS) programs in Starr and Zapata Counties. A Starr County native, Rosario is a stay-at-home mother of four, who loves the HS/EHS programs and what they do for children and the community. Her three eldest children are HS graduates, and her youngest is currently enrolled in EHS and will be transitioning to the HS program soon. She is also a participant in the AVANCE Parent-Child Education Program and serves as the National Board’s representative for the children and families served by AVANCE HS/EHS programs in Starr and Zapata Counties.
Dr. Daniel King
Dr. Daniel P. King is the Executive Director of Region One Education Service Center, which serves 38 school districts across eight counties in South Texas. A long-time public school Superintendent, Dr. King was named state Superintendent of the Year in 2006 by the Texas Association of School Boards. In 2019, Dr. King retired as Superintendent of the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA). Under his leadership, PSJA reduced the number of annual dropouts and increased the four-year graduation rate and overall high school completion rates to surpass state averages. Prior to PSJA, Dr. King led Hidalgo ISD for eight years. Dr. King earned his Ph.D. from The University of Texas. He completed his undergraduate and Master’s degree at The University of Texas-Pan American.
Lydia Aleman
A highly engaged professional with leadership skills in nonprofit organizations and higher education, Lydia Aleman is the Director of Development Services for Driscoll Children’s Hospital in McAllen, Texas. Before Driscoll, she served as the CEO for Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas (GSGST). She joined GSGST after 26 years in higher education where she served as the Associate Vice President of Advancement Services. She has extensive experience in fundraising, management, accounting and development. Lydia earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting, and she holds two master’s degrees, an MBA and a MACC (master’s in accountancy).
Dr. Cathy Ayoub
Dr. Catherine Ayoub is a licensed psychologist and nurse practitioner whose work at the Brazelton Touchpoints Center includes program development, research, evaluation, consultation, and training. She is responsible for overseeing the evaluation efforts at the Center and is presently engaged in research around child, family, and system-level assessment with attention to evidence-based practice. Raised in Mexico, Dr. Ayoub comes from a multicultural background and has special expertise in clinical work, program development, and research with Latino families. She completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University and holds master’s degrees from Emory University and Harvard University, as well as a Ph.D. in Counseling and Consulting Psychology and an Ed.D from Harvard University.
Diana Cavazos
Diana Cavazos serves on the AVANCE Board of Directors as parent representative. She is a native of Pharr, Texas and is currently the president of the Parent Policy Council for AVANCE Early Head Start programs in Hidalgo County. She is a working mother with three children enrolled in the EHS-Child Care Partnership (CCP) Program. Ms. Cavazos has had two of her children enrolled in the CCP since 2016. Her experience includes serving as City Secretary for the City of San Juan. Currently Ms. Cavazos is working on opening up a new business while also working alongside her father in the family business. Ms. Cavazos earned her Business Administration Associates Degree at South Texas College and her bachelor’s in Business Administration Management from UTRGV.
Kelly Cutler

Kelly Cutler is a Partner on New Profit’s Social Entrepreneur Investing Team, a role that includes leading strategy, engaging donors, leading due diligence for deal selection, and providing deal support to organizations. Kelly has focused her career on work that has the potential to transform the lives of young people, families, and communities. She began her career with business operations and fundraising at entrepreneurial nonprofit Teen Voices. She then served on the Executive Team at Families First Parenting Programs. Prior to joining New Profit, Kelly worked as a Consultant at L.E.K. Consulting, a global management consulting firm. Kelly has a BA in English from Boston University and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
Greg Flores

Greg Flores is the founder and owner of Sculpted Leaders, LLC, an executive consulting firm. He also consults closely with Private Equity organizations as they assess purchases and sale of portfolio assets. He built his 35+ year career in Human Resources leadership positions with such companies as Pilot Flying J., Inc., The TJX Companies, Inc., HEB, Pepsico and Daymon Worldwide. He has served on boards for EnsembleIQ, National Domestic Violence Hotline, Our Lady of the Lake University, Conexion and AVANCE-San Antonio. Greg is also a scuba diver instructor, enjoys reading fiction/non-fiction, yoga and is into metal sculpting. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Statistics from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and studied industrial psychology at the University of North Texas.
Maria Garcia

Maria Garcia is the Chief Program Officer for AVANCE. As CPO, she plays a vital role in executing the organization’s strategic vision, overseeing the delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of AVANCE programming and services. Maria brings to AVANCE her passion for early childhood education and her wealth of experience in classroom instruction, administration, bilingual education, and program development and implementation. Maria began her career with Austin Independent School District, where she taught first- and third-grade students for over nine years. Later, she joined Georgetown Independent School District, serving in teaching and administrative roles before becoming the Bilingual, English as a Second Language, and Languages Other Than English District Coordinator. Most recently, she served as Account Executive for Lexia Learning, a leading literacy technology company. Maria holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and a Master of Education in Education Leadership and Administration from Concordia University Texas.
Colleen Bridger, MPH, PhD
Dr. Colleen Bridger is the founder and CEO of Colleen Bridger Consulting, LLC, where she works with non-profits, foundations, and government organizations to untangle and address complex problems using a public health/ecological approach. Dr. Bridger started her career in 1990 working with a Migrant Farmworker Clinic in Eastern North Carolina. She then transitioned to working with international development organizations and North Carolina’s Division of Public Health. Previously, Dr. Bridger led the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and served as the Assistant City Manager for the City of San Antonio. While with the City, she worked with community leaders to develop a county-wide Trauma Informed Care system comprising a Trauma Informed Care Consortium, Institute, and Certification process. She has an undergraduate degree in International Development from The School for International Training, a Master of Public Health degree from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a PhD in Health Services research from The University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
Monserrat Mata
Mental Health Specialist
Monserrat Mata serves as the Mental Health Specialist at AVANCE, where she leads the implementation of the WELL TOGETHER Mental Health Curriculum for participants in the Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP). In this role, she also oversees key administrative functions and directs the training and professional development of Parent Educators, equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to strengthen community connections and promote mental health awareness among the families they serve.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Mata worked as a Parent Educator and Case Worker, where she focused on developing and supporting mental health promoters as vital liaisons between the community and health services. Through this work, she provided education on prevention, early identification, and access to resources for individuals experiencing mental health challenges—efforts that closely align with the Mental Health Ambassadors initiative.
Ms. Mata holds a Mental Health Certification from the MHFA Council for Mental Health Wellbeing, reflecting her commitment to advancing mental health education and empowering communities through culturally responsive and accessible support. She also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of NAMI North Texas, where she has contributed her leadership for the past two years.
Melinda Escobal
Melinda Escobal has spent 30+ years developing her understanding and skills in working with young children as a Teacher, Center Director, Education Specialist/Mentor, and Program Manager. She specializes in sharing her knowledge and experience with adults in Early Childhood. She obtained her degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, with an emphasis in Early Childhood Development, from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is furthering her knowledge in the Master's Program for Education and Administration at Walden University.
Esmeralda Fuentes
Esmeralda Fuentes is the Partnerships Manager at Cognitive ToyBox. She worked previously as a bilingual Head Start teacher in San Antonio ISD, a Transitional Kindergarten teacher at San Francisco Unified, and an early childhood instructional coach and trainer at New Teacher Center for large school districts. She has 10+ years of experience in the classroom and supporting early childhood educators, coaches, and administrators. She holds a B.A. in Urban Education and a M.A. in Elementary Education, both from Stanford University.
Snejana Nihtianova
Snejana Nihtianova is the Director of Research, Operations, and Compliances for the Texas Policy Lab, where she contributes to the scientific and intellectual leadership of the organization. She manages and mentors research staff, providing scientific direction to ensure the rigor and quality of all work. Currently, she is overseeing research trials and observational studies in different research fields including child and language development, public health, and women health. Dr. Nihtianova has extensive experience in successfully conducting and managing multiple research studies and training research personnel. For ten years, she served as Senior Clinical Research Manager in the Policy Lab at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where research breakthroughs have improved the lives of countless children throughout the world. At CHOP, she performed quality control and quality assurance to ensure clinical data accuracy and integrity, while directly supervising study activities and maintaining communication with the Study Core Center at CHOP. Dr. Nihtianova earned her doctorate from Walden University in Public Health with a specialization in epidemiology. In addition, she holds two master’s degrees. The first is in Biological Science, which she completed in Bulgaria at Plovdiv University and the second in Clinical Research Organization and Management at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
Allison Pape
Chief Program Officer
Allison Pape is the Chief Program Officer for AVANCE. As CPO, she is pivotal in carrying out the organization’s mission, overseeing the delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of AVANCE programming and services. Allison brings to AVANCE her passion for education and her wealth of experience in classroom instruction, administration and leadership, and large-scale educational initiatives. Prior to joining AVANCE, Allison was the Innovation Specialist for Seguin ISD, where she supported district-wide initiatives, developed new instructional models to drive school improvement, and facilitated the creation and monitoring of the district’s multi-year strategic plan. She served in administrative and leadership positions for more than a decade, including Academic Dean for A.J. Briesemeister Middle School and Director of Secondary and Advanced Academics for Seguin ISD. Before taking on leadership roles, Allison taught middle and high school classes for eight years. Allison holds bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and southwest studies from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Arts in history from Texas State University. She also earned her teacher certification from the University of Texas at San Antonio and her principal certification from Lamar University.

Jorge Padilla is a partner in the trial section of Jackson Walker LLP. He has extensive experience litigating business disputes for a variety of clients. Although his practice is focused in Austin, Texas, Jorge has advocated for his clients in state and federal courts throughout Texas. He has been recognized as one of “Austin’s Top Attorneys” by Austin Monthly, a Texas Rising Star by Thomson Reuters, and one of “The Best Lawyers in America” in Commercial Litigation by Woodward/White Inc. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Texas at Austin and received his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. As a father of three, he believes in AVANCE’s mission to train and educate both parents and children and that parents are the primary educators for their children.
Dolores Cavazos Hernandez
Mrs. Dolores Cavazos Hernandez is a mother of ten (10) biological children and grandmother to eight (8) children. She is 46 years old, self-employed, a traditional healer by profession, and a 19-year survivor of uterine cancer. Dolores has actively participated in the AVANCE Early Head Start Child Care Partnership (CCP) program since 2021. Dolores was elected treasurer of the Parent Policy Council in 2022 and has been an avid spokeswoman for AVANCE programs. In May 2023, her child William Gregory Ramirez aged out of our program, and as a result, she was voted “Community Representative” for the CCP program. Dolores became passionate about AVANCE programs and channels her passion to help others. She wants to continue volunteering in any way possible to continue supporting AVANCE families.

He advocates for labor rights and positively impacts children's lives as Chair of the AVANCE-Houston Policy Council and President of the Parent Committee. In his free time, Sterling enjoys reading and spending time with his two children.
Rose Martinez
Parent Representative
Rose is a member of the AVANCE-San Antonio Policy Council. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from UIW and has worked at Vestal Elementary for 16 years, teaching Kindergarten, First, and Third Grade. During her years at Vestal, she has been a team leader, helped in different communities, and is part of DEPERC, where they discuss important decisions that impact our community, employees, stakeholders, and mostly their students. She is also a member of the Harlandale Education Association and is part of the Insurance Advisory. Being involved in child development and education is important to Rose, and she is a certified Foster Care. She is currently raising her granddaughter who attends the AVANCE 6 months-2 years Early Head Start at Fenley Main.
Iliana Alanis, Ph.D.
Professor of Early Childhood and Elementary Education UTSA
Dr. Iliana Alanís, a native of South Texas, earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas, Austin, specializing in Multilingual Studies and Educational Psychology. As a university faculty member, her primary focus is on engaging teacher candidates and practicing teachers in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, emphasizing the rights of young children to develop their native language and cultural identity. Dr. Alanís adopts a sociocultural lens in her research, examining effective pedagogical practices in early childhood within dual language contexts. Her extensive body of work includes over 50 refereed publications, such as "Translingual Partners in Early Childhood Elementary Education: Pedagogies on Linguistic and Cognitive Engagement" published by Peter Lang Publishers, New York, NY, and "Supporting Dual Language Learners in Diverse Environments in Preschool & Kindergarten" published by NAEYC in Washington, DC. Before entering academia, Dr. Alanís was a bilingual teacher for second-grade students in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. For more than two decades, she has facilitated professional development for early childhood educators in dual language settings as a Dual Language Training Institute member and a founding member of the Vales por Dos Consulting Group. Furthermore, she has held leadership positions, including the Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) presidency and National Latino Children’s Institute board member. Recently, she concluded her five-year elected service as a Governing Board Member for the National Association for Early Childhood Education (NAEYC). Currently, she is a member of the Executive Board for AVANCE National and a member of the Advisory Board for AVANCE San Antonio.
Priscilla Camacho
Priscilla serves as the Chief Legislative, Industry, & External Relations Officer at Alamo Colleges District. In her role, she focuses on legislative policy, relationships with industry partners, and collaborating with community organizations whose mission and work align with the Alamo Colleges. Prior to Alamo Colleges, Priscilla worked for the Dallas Regional Chamber and the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. A family law attorney early in her career, Priscilla worked for several San Antonio law firms, including Plunket & Gibson and Ford & Massey. She also owned and operated her own law practice for several years. She is a native of Laredo, Texas, and graduated from St. Mary’s University with a degree in English & Communication Arts. She received her law degree from the Texas Tech University School of Law. Priscilla has also served in various capacities on nonprofit and governmental boards and has been recognized for her service to the bar and community. Priscilla has been named as a 40 under 40 leader by the San Antonio Business Journal, G.O.L.D. Award recipient from the Texas Tech University School of Law, Outstanding Young Lawyer by the Bexar County Women’s Bar Association, and a Texas Super Lawyer Rising Star by Texas Monthly and Scene in SA Magazine.

Ife Gbosi leads Commercial Credit Change Initiatives for Bank of America. Her responsibilities include overseeing various processes and platforms that deliver end-to-end credit solutions for Business Banking, Global Commercial Banking, and Global Markets clients. Prior to her current role, Ife was a Leader on Loan to Prairie View A&M University. Ife led campus-wide initiatives to connect students to career pathways and engaged with employers to drive the hiring of Prairie View A&M students for internships and full-time positions. Ife joined Bank of America in December 2005 and held several leadership positions in its Consumer Bank, Global Technology and Operations division, and Regulatory Compliance before joining the Leader on Loan Program.
Belinda May Arambula
Belinda May Arambula is a partner in Terrazas PLLC, where she has diverse civil litigation practice, ranging from construction defect to business litigation and personal injury. She also serves on the boards of several state and local bar organizations, including the Texas Rules of Evidence Committee, Austin Bar Foundation, and Hispanic Bar Association of Austin (former president). When she is not serving her clients or the legal community, Belinda is pounding the pavement training for her next race or volunteering with the Hispanic Bar Foundation, AVANCE-Austin Chapter, and Boy Scouts of America. Belinda earned her undergraduate degree from Baylor University and her law degree from the University of Illinois, College of Law.
Dr. Nicole McZeal Walters

Dr. Nicole McZeal Walters serves as the Founding Dean of the Kolbe School of Innovation and Professional Studies at the University of St. Thomas and is also an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership. As a leadership professor, her research agenda includes developing leaders to embrace servant and moral leadership, social philanthropy, and integrating culture and language to support academic achievement in historically underserved, marginalized students. Her academic work has been published in the Women, Gender, and Families of Color Journal, the International Journal of Educational Reform, Wisconsin English Journal, Gifted Child Today, and School Leadership Review. She is a co-editor of a book entitled Gumbo for the Soul II: Liberating Memoirs and Stories to Inspire Females of Color. Dr. Walters has been awarded Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Child Care Council of Greater Houston, Outstanding UH College of Education Award by the University of Houston, the Excellence in Education Award by Texas Southern University, Founders’ Day Award by Spelman College, and has been recognized by Houston Magazine as one of Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women. Dr. Walters holds a Bachelor of Science in English and Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Houston, and a Masters and Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Texas Southern University.
Alice Rodriguez
Alice Rodriguez has over 35 years of extensive banking experience with JPMorgan Chase and its predecessors. She has held executive positions in Business Banking, Consumer Banking, Wealth Management, and Community Impact. Since retiring, Alice has engaged more actively in a business that she has co-owned with her husband, Tom Kendall, for 20 years. Kendall Milagro Inc. is a family-owned business in the Dallas area that focuses on boutique home building and real estate investments. She sits on the board of the largest utility player in Texas, Oncor Electric Delivery Co. Alice holds a BBA in Management from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Her professional investment licenses include series 7, 9, 10, and 66. Alice is the immediate past chair for the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on many other boards including Dream Spring CDFI, Latino Business Action Network, Perot Museum, and Dallas Arboretum.
Yesenia Alvarez-Gonzalez

Prior to becoming Executive Director, Yesenia Alvarez-Gonzalez served as Chief Program Officer at AVANCE – San Antonio. Having been with AVANCE for 20 years, her experience includes teaching parenting classes, training on program leadership, supervision and management, referral and resource advocacy, and conflict resolution. She began her career as a Parent Educator in AVANCE’s Parent-Child Education Program. Through the years at AVANCE, she has administered and implemented alongside a dynamic team of educators and directors AVANCE’s Parent/Child center- and school-based, Services to Fathers, and Early Head Start and Head Start programs, to include family engagement services.
Yesenia strongly believes in the importance of AVANCE engaging low-income families with young children, and that parents are their child’s first and most important teachers. Yesenia’s passion is to serve the community where she was raised - by a single parent on government subsidies, facing hunger and homelessness.
The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Yesenia attended SAISD inner-city schools and was her family’s first high school and college graduate. After studying at San Antonio College, she earned her Master’s in Nonprofit Management & Leadership from Our Lady of the Lake University.
Yesenia enjoys spending time with her husband, three children and many friends; taking bicycle rides along the mission trails, Zumba workouts, gardening and caring for their family’s pet rabbit.
Maggie Jaime
Executive Director, AVANCE-Austin
Maggie joined AVANCE-Austin in 2017 as Home Visit Lead and has served as Program Director since 2023.
Maggie Jaime, a dedicated advocate and community leader, is the child of migrant farm workers who traveled across the US. Raised in Brownsville, TX, in the Rio Grande Valley, Maggie grew up in a low-income and under-resourced environment. As a first-generation high school and college graduate, she broke new ground for her family. Her career began as an Investigator for Child Protective Services in the Rio Grande Valley, followed by a role as a Community Outreach Worker in Baltimore, MD, where she provided outreach and case management for Latina immigrant victims of intimate partner violence. Maggie also volunteered as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) in Baltimore, advocating for children’s best interests during child welfare proceedings. In Austin, she worked as a CPS Policy Analyst, pushing for better protections at the intersection of child welfare and domestic violence. Eight years ago, Maggie joined AVANCE, where she built out the Home Visitation component, eventually rising to Program Manager and later Program Director, launching new initiatives like AIMS, Mamas Avanzando, Career Navigation services, and AVANCE to College. She has served on the City of Austin Child Advisory Council, the Community Strategy Team for the University of Texas’s Whole Communities Whole Health study, and the Recruitment and Retention Workgroup, advising on culturally responsive strategies. Maggie shares her life with her husband Saul, two daughters Sonny and August, and their dog Banjo Macaroni.
Melinda Gonzalez
Founder and Yoga Instructor
Melinda Gonzalez is a lifelong student of yoga. As an instructor, she is dedicated to holding space where everyone feels welcome and is empowered to create a practice that is in alignment with their body, heart, and mind. Yoga has changed her perspective on life and she wants to share that gift with others who are seeking to start or continue their journey.
After graduating from college, Melinda discovered she was prediabetic and at risk for high blood pressure. Knowing that she had to make a change led her to try yoga. Despite feeling out of place, clumsy, and awkward at first, she fell in love with the practice. Four years later she received her Power Up 200 Hour TT from The AC Power Yoga Institute in SATX.
In 2014, Melinda founded Nomadik Yoga with a mission to cultivate an inclusive environment for individuals to experience the physical and mental benefits, as well as the healing nature of yoga through affordable public and private yoga instruction. Since then she has been teaching donation-based or free community classes throughout the city of San Antonio and has cultivated partnerships with LezRideSA, Pride Center San Antonio, La Botanica, Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex, Flight Gallery, and The Historic Pearl Brewery.
Dr. Gloria Martinez
Dr. Gloria Jean Martinez is a native of San Antonio, Texas and is a proud daughter and granddaughter of Mexican immigrants. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a specialization in Spanish from Our Lady of the Lake University. She also received a Master’s Degree and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Martinez also holds a Texas Superintendent Certification.
Dr. Martinez began her educational career twenty-five years ago at her alma mater Edgewood ISD as a bilingual teacher. In the seventeen years she spent in Edgewood ISD she also served in the following roles: literacy teacher, instructional facilitator, assistant principal, and principal. During her first principalship, Dr. Martinez led Loma Park Elementary to major improvements in accountability including receiving five Distinction Designations, two years in a row from the Texas Education Agency.
In 2017, Dr. Martinez was honored to take a principal position in one of the largest urban school districts in San Antonio, Texas, San Antonio ISD at Sarah King Elementary an improvement required school. Dr. Martinez spent three years at this school and under her leadership she led the school to double digit gains and assisted in getting the school out of improvement required in her first year there. In 2020, she received a promotion that took her to Pleasanton ISD where she served as the Director of School Support. Currently, Dr. Martinez is on her third year as principal at De Zavala Elementary in San Antonio ISD and is also a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she teaches master students in the principalship program. Dr. Martinez is a participant of the 23-24 Cahn National Distinguished Principal Fellowship where she networks with principals from across the nation.
Dr. Gloria Martinez is a lifelong learner and is passionate about providing a quality and equitable education for every student that crosses her path and builds strong relationships with her students, staff and community.
Debbie Akers
Debbie Akers took the scenic route to Education Service Center, Region 20—literally! After an adventurous hiatus hiking the Pacific Crest Trail with her daughter, she brought her energy and passion to ESC-20. Starting as a project manager, Debbie supported LEAs with Strong Foundations Research-Based Instructional Strategies and TCLAS grant initiatives from the Texas Education Agency. Now, as the Component Director of Early Childhood Education, she's thrilled to return to her roots and true passion.
Debbie's educational journey began at the University of Texas at San Antonio and upon graduation, she spent 14 joyful years shaping young minds in the early grades. In 2005, she earned her Master’s degree in special education as an educational diagnostician from Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and soon after became an instructional specialist. January 2008 marked her transition to administration as she took on the role of assistant principal at a 4th and 5th-grade campus. She earned her administrative certification through the Education Service Center, Region XX's Cohort of Leadership Associates program, and championed Positive Behavior Support, eventually becoming the campus principal in 2009.
After a successful year at a recognized school, Ms. Akers was promoted to lead an elementary campus with over 600 students. Three years later, she advanced to high school principal, overseeing a pipeline of students she had once taught in elementary school. After five years in this role, she joined Floresville ISD as the Director of Special Education and District Testing Coordinator, serving for four years.
Outside of her professional life, Debbie's personal adventures are just as fulfilling. Her daughter, a graduate of Texas A&M College Station, now calls Salt Lake City, Utah, home. Her son, a finance major from Texas Tech University, lives in Lubbock with his wife and eagerly anticipates their first baby's arrival in November. The family loves to hit the slopes every winter, cherishing their annual snowy escapades.

Dr. Catherine O’Brien (she/her/hers)

“Dr. Cat” has worked in the field of early childhood education for over 25 years in various roles. Currently, she is the Director of Campus Childcare and faculty in the Department of Educator and Leadership Preparation, Early Childhood Program at Texas A&M University San Antonio. She is the mother of 5 adult children, and a lover of nature and play. Holding a BA in ECE and Business Administration, MA in Education specializing in Early Childhood, and an Ed.D. in Teaching and Learning, Catherine is also a lifelong learner, passionate about supporting educators, families, and young children to reach their full potential.
Dr. Cat works to create a sense of community in the learning environment that is co-created with students. Like Loris Malaguzzi, Dr. Cat has cultivated the Image of the Child into her teaching philosophy on students and truly believes that every student is a capable, competent, individual that has 100 languages more to express themselves (Edwards, Gandini & Forman, 2012).
Dr. Cat’s passion is advocating for the rights of children including the right to play, the right to high quality early care and education, and the right to safe and heathy environments to grow and develop.
Dr. Irma Guerra
Irma Guerra has dedicated over 17 years to the education community, gaining diverse experience across various roles. She began her career as a classroom teacher in bilingual program models spanning multiple grade levels. Her expertise grew as she took on roles such as campus academic facilitator and district director for elementary education and federal programs. At the regional level, Irma served as a consultant in bilingual education and reading language arts, and later, as a coordinator for multiple program areas at Education Service Center, Region 20.
Irma earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Texas Tech University. Currently, she serves as a coordinator in the Early Childhood component at ESC-20, where she leads a dynamic team dedicated to supporting and advocating for early childhood education. Her work encompasses overseeing the ESC-20 Head Start program, Texas School Ready initiative, the H.O.P.E.S. grant, and a variety of other products and services offered to local education agencies.
Ana De Hoyos O'Connor
Ana De Hoyos O'Connor, from San Antonio, is a dedicated and experienced professional in Early Childhood Studies. Currently serving as a full-time Professor of Early Childhood Studies at San Antonio College, Ana brings over thirty-five years of invaluable expertise to education.
Ana's illustrious career spans diverse roles, including mentor teacher, lab instructor, and Special Quest Coach for Head Start Programs. Her passion for shaping the future of education is evident in her commitment to working with teachers of preschool children, school-age students, parents, and early childhood programs.
She holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of the Incarnate Word and a Master's degree in Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her commitment to lifelong learning is reflected in her continuous pursuit of knowledge and understanding in the field of education.
In addition to her teaching role, Ana actively contributes to various organizations. She serves on the Texas Association for Education T.E.A.C.H. board, showcasing her dedication to advocacy and advancement within the education sector. Furthermore, Ana holds the esteemed position of Chair for the Early Childhood Committee at Alamo Workforce Solution, where she plays a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives that impact early childhood education in the region.

Marisa Mendez
Marisa Mendez was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary's University, and Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Marisa also holds a Master of Education in Special Education from Texas A&M.
Principal Mendez has spent 18 years in the field of Education working in various capacities as an Instructional Assistant, General Education Teacher, Special Education Teacher, and Assistant Principal. Ms. Mendez has served in the role of campus principal for 13 years supporting Head Start and Pre-K scholars.

Dr. Magda Villarreal
Executive Director, Rio Grande Valley
As Executive Director for the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Magda Villarreal oversees staff, programs, and operations, ensuring the successful execution of AVANCE’s mission and strategic plan. She also leads community engagement initiatives and efforts to expand AVANCE's reach and impact in the region.
Dr. Villarreal has over two decades of leadership experience in education, most recently as Area/Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources for La Joya ISD. Her background includes having served as Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and for Curriculum and Instruction, Executive Director for Accountability and Evaluation, and both an elementary and middle school principal. Her diverse expertise spans curriculum development, student services, human resources management, and community engagement. Throughout her career, Dr. Villarreal has been dedicated to empowering students and staff alike, building strong relationships with parents, businesses, and local agencies to drive student success.
Dr. Villarreal holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and a Master of Educational Leadership from the University of Texas-Pan American, where she also earned her undergraduate degree.
Carla Ortiz
Chief of Staff
Carla Ortiz serves as the Chief of Staff for AVANCE, supporting the CEO and the leadership team across the AVANCE network. Her leadership is grounded in her personal and professional journey as the proud daughter of two Salvadoran refugees who believed in the power of early childhood education and invested their limited financial resources to create new opportunities for Carla and her brother. A first-generation college graduate, Carla attended St. Mary's University, earning her B.A. in English and Communication Arts and her M.A. in International Relations, both with academic distinction.
Before joining AVANCE, Carla was the Regional Office Field Director for Catholic Relief Services. She has an extensive background in nonprofit development, communications, and advocacy, including leadership roles at Catholic Relief Services, St. Mary's University, and Merced Housing Texas. Fluent in English and Spanish, Carla's expertise spans community engagement, relationship-building with diverse stakeholders, strategic program development, project management, and leading cross-functional teams.
Carla’s passion for AVANCE's mission stems from her family's journey, which, like many Latino families, has known struggle but also embodies resilience. She recognizes that access to educational opportunities and a supportive community helped create more equity and build power in the lives of her family. She feels honored to serve an organization rooted in a two-generation approach that centers racial equity and addresses educational, economic, and social disparities.

Bertha Espinoza, originally from Mexico, is a loving wife and mother of four children, who serve as her biggest source of motivation and pride. With over ten years of experience at AVANCE, Bertha has performed a variety of vital roles that have given her a comprehensive understanding of child development and education. Currently, she works as an ECE Coach, guiding and training ECE teachers to promote children's well-being and optimal growth from an early age. Bertha supplements her professional work by pursuing a bachelor's degree in Pedagogy and a Certification as an Infants and Toddlers Specialist, and she is constantly looking to update and expand her expertise to provide high-quality educational support. Her vocation, dedication, and passion for education make her a leader in the education field, committed to changing and impacting teachers and children's lives.
Erika Gonzalez
Parent Educator/Toymaker
Erika Gonzalez was born in Venezuela and graduated with a degree in Sociology from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1997. She then completed postgraduate studies in Human Resources Management at Universidad Simón Rodríguez in 1998. For the past five years, she has been with AVANCE, where she has held various roles, including Home Visit, Toy Instructor, and, currently, Parent Educator. Erika has been married for 27 years and has two daughters, whom she considers her greatest pride. She is known for always seeking genuine connections with people and adding value to every interaction.
Valeska Lucart
Parent Educator/Toymaker
Valeska Lucart is a Social Communicator specializing in Audiovisuals. She was born in Venezuela and graduated in 2005 from the Universidad Bicentenaria de Aragua. Her experience in media and audiovisual production has allowed her to develop impactful content strategies. For the past five years, she has worked at AVANCE, where she has served as a Toy Instructor and is currently a Parent Educator.
In her personal life, Valeska enjoys family life with her husband and two children. She has been married for 18 years. She is passionate about connecting with people, inspiring others, and always seeking to contribute something positive to others.
Noemi Patiño Mandujano
ECE and Events Coordinator
Noemi Patiño was born in México. She holds a degree in Nursing and Obstetrics and has completed a diploma in Digital Marketing. She is currently in the process of completing her degree in Educational Sciences and is pursuing a certification in infants and toddlers, continuously strengthening her preparation in early childhood development.
Her first connection with AVANCE was as a participant in the PCEP program 13 years ago. After graduating, she joined the AVANCE North Texas team, where she has taken on various roles and currently serves as the ECE and Events Coordinator. Her professional journey has allowed her to discover a deep passion for education, becoming an active advocate for learning in the early years.
On a personal level, Noemi finds inspiration and strength in her husband, whom she deeply admires and considers her greatest support. Together, they share the joy of their daughter, Hannany, who has transformed her life and motivates her to grow continuously as a mother, professional, and human being.
Luz Moncada
Communications Specialist
Luz Moncada is a Communications Specialist at AVANCE, where she amplifies the organization’s mission by crafting compelling narratives through social media and the ¡VAMOS! Newsletter. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from California State University Channel Islands.
Previously, as a Community Liaison in the Coachella Valley, Luz developed impactful public health programs that fostered trust and strengthened community relationships. Today, she continues to leverage her expertise in storytelling to drive meaningful change. Luz is driven by the belief that strategic communication can transform systems and empower communities.
Marisol Lua
Marisol Lua is a Senior Graphic Designer at AVANCE National. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from Lamar University and is passionate about bringing awareness to how collaboration, education, and creativity can positively impact the world.
Before joining AVANCE, she held several positions in marketing and advertising, fostering cross-functional collaboration and using her creative skills to help bring stories to life. She remains committed to using her skills for good and continues to explore ways to prioritize collaboration, innovation, and education.
Yessica Orellana
PCEP Coordinator
Yessica Orellana is the Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP) Coordinator at AVANCE National. In this role, she provides coaching and guidance to educators across the AVANCE network, helping them effectively implement best practices in the various programs and services offered at their sites.
Yessica’s journey with AVANCE began as a participant in the program, where she discovered her passion for early childhood education. She brings over seven years of experience working within AVANCE, before joining AVANCE Inc. as PCEP Coach, she worked at AVANCE North Texas during 4 years where she served in multiple capacities, including Home Visitor, Early Childhood Education (ECE) Teacher Assistant, and ECE Teacher.
Yessica holds a Bachelor's degree in Engineering with a major in Computer Science, is certified as a member of the Texas Infant and Toddler Specialist Network, and holds a certificate in Teacher Assistant Preparation. Her deep commitment to supporting families is rooted in her own experience with AVANCE. She is driven by a desire to empower others in her community to become not only their children's first teachers, but also their most inspiring role models
Dr. Lizzy Pérez
Dr. Elizabeth "Lizzy" Pérez is a nationally recognized leadership coach, former principal, and Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator who brings over three decades of real-world experience in education, equity, and organizational change. Rooted in her South Texas upbringing and powered by a PhD in Leadership Studies, Lizzy is known for transforming rooms, not just with insight, but with soul.
A former teacher, coach, and district leader, Dr. Pérez has spent her career advocating for systems that truly see, support, and uplift families and communities. Her work bridges the heart of public education with the evolving needs of multigenerational and culturally rooted leadership. Whether she's leading executives through courageous conversations or guiding parent leaders to step into their power, Lizzy fosters spaces of psychological safety, emotional intelligence, and radical belonging.
At the core of her work is a belief that perfectionism and fear are barriers to progress, and she’s made it her mission to help leaders across all sectors unmask them. Dr. Teresa Granillo
Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Teresa Granillo is the Chief Executive Officer of AVANCE. As CEO, she sets the vision and strategic plan for the organization and provides guidance and oversight to daily operations. She engages key stakeholders and advocates and elevates the mission of AVANCE. A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Granillo earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and advanced degrees from the University of Michigan, including Master of Science degrees in Social Work and Psychology, and a dual Ph.D. in Social Work and Psychology.
Prior to AVANCE, Dr. Granillo served six years as Executive Director of Con Mi MADRE, another two-generation organization that supports young Latinas on the path to higher education. Before Con Mi MADRE, Dr. Granillo was a tenure-track professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Steve Hicks School of Social Work, where she received the Lora Lee Teaching Award.
Dr. Granillo is also active in her community, serving on the National Advisory Council for the Hogg Mental Health Foundation and the Board of Directors of UnidosUS. She was selected as a 2024 Ascend Fellow at the Aspen Institute and her leadership has been recognized in many arenas including being recognized with an Austin 40 Under 40 award. Driven by her personal experiences, she is a passionate advocate for education and the well-being of Latina/o children and families. As a Latina raised by a single mother, Dr. Granillo knows firsthand how education can end the cycle of poverty and has dedicated her career to ensuring that all individuals have access to high-quality education.
Adriana Paniagua
PCEP Coordinator
Adriana Paniagua began her journey with AVANCE as a program participant with her three children. There, she received valuable tools that helped her grow both as a mother and as a professional. Adriana holds an associate degree in Child Development, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Educational Sciences as well as a certification as a Toddler Specialist.
Over the past 23 years, Adriana has served in various roles at AVANCE, including Early Childhood Teacher, Home Visitor, Toy Instructor, Parent Educator, Early Childhood Coach, and currently, Parent-Child Education Program Coordinator.
Adriana's greatest motivation is her family, who have always supported and encouraged her to grow professionally. She is deeply committed to education and to empowering families, and continues to serve her community with dedication, compassion, and respect.
María Torres
PCEP Coordinator
María Torres is the Parent-Child Education Program Coordinator at AVANCE National. She brings over 21 years of experience in early childhood development and family education. In recent years, she has led initiatives focused on strengthening the role of families as their children’s first and most important teachers, working closely with Latino communities.
She holds a Master’s degree in General Psychology and a second Master’s degree in Child and Adolescent Developmental Psychology. María is recognized for her leadership, her strategic approach to program implementation, and her commitment to improving outcomes for children and families through evidence-based practices.
María Torres is the Parent-Child Education Program Coordinator at AVANCE National. She brings over 20 years of experience in early childhood development and family education, including the last 8 years with AVANCE Houston. María has worked closely with Latino communities facilitating parenting programs, home visits, and the development of educational materials. She holds a Master’s degree in General Psychology and a second Master’s degree in Child and Adolescent Developmental Psychology. María is dedicated to empowering families as their children’s first and most important teachers.
Norma Vargas
Director of Parent Child Education Program
Norma Vargas is the PCEP Program Director at AVANCE, INC. She provides guidance and supports sites across the AVANCE network with training and coaching on curriculum and program implementation based on best practices in early childhood, parenting, and adult education. She also supports the sites with program fidelity and effective implementation of programming and services. Before joining AVANCE, Inc., Norma worked at the AVANCE North Texas site for 13 years. She was most recently a Parent Educator, but also served as Early Childhood Supervisor, a Home Visitor and Lead Teacher during her tenure at the North Texas Chapter. Norma has a bachelor's degree in Pedagogy, an Associate Degree in Child Growth and Development, a Child Development Associate credential, is School Readiness Certified, and has a Train of Trainer certification in Infant-Toddler Specialist Network in Texas.
Juana Medina
PCEP Implementation Coordinator
Juana Medina is an Implementation Coach for PCEP at AVANCE. She brings over two decades of experience working with children and families, including 12 years at AVANCE-El Paso before its closure. During her time there, she served five years as a Parent Educator, five years as a Program Supervisor, and two final years as a Parent Educator/Home Visitor.
Before joining AVANCE in 2007, Juana spent eight years at the YWCA—six years in the afterschool program and two years as a daycare director. Her career has always been rooted in a deep passion for supporting children and families.
It was during her internship with AVANCE that Juana realized a powerful truth: to make a lasting impact on a child’s life, you must also work with the parents. While programs like afterschool care and daycare offer valuable support, lasting change begins at home. Through AVANCE, she learned that empowering parents as their children’s first teachers leads to real, long-term transformation.
In her current role, Juana supports sites implementing Avanzando Juntos. She is passionate about helping families, strengthening educators’ skills, and expanding PCEP into new communities. She also trains AVANCE staff in curriculum implementation and promotes program fidelity across the network.
Professionally, Juana aims to contribute to AVANCE’s growth and sustainability of AVANCE in her hometown of El Paso. Personally, she aspires to earn a Master's degree.
Outside of work, Juana enjoys spending quality time with her family—especially reading to her daughters or watching movies together.
Amanda Quiroz-Guajardo
Amanda Quiroz-Guajardo is a bilingual consultant, trainer, and advocate with over three decades of experience working alongside Latino families to strengthen early childhood education, family engagement, and child abuse prevention. She brings a deep commitment to culturally responsive practice, lifting up the voices of home visitors, parent educators, and communities often underrepresented in policy conversations. Amanda serves on the National Steering Committee for Early Learning, helping to shape equitable approaches to early care and education across the country. As the founder of a consulting practice rooted in culture, healing, and family voice, she supports organizations in building systems that promote protective factors, dual language development, and intergenerational resilience.
Stephanie Otero
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Stephanie Otero, Vice President of Operations for the El Paso Community Foundation, has made El Paso her home for more than twenty-five years. A champion for education and community development, she led the creation of the $72 million La Nube STEAM Discovery Center, a world-class inclusive space for learning, and co-founded the El Paso Regional Educator Community of Practice, developing innovative programs to address regional education needs. Previously she has worked for Spoleto Festival U.S.A., Opera Colorado, the El Paso Independent School District and the Ysleta Independent School District. Her commitment to community service has always been strong. Currently she is President of the El Paso Special Need Education Center Board of Directors; a Board member for La Nube and Philosophic Systems Institute; a member of the University of Texas at El Paso Department of Education Advisory Board; and a Steering Committee Member for Early Matters El Paso. Her work has been recognized with several awards including 2022 El Paso Inc. Woman of Impact; 2024 Philanthropy Southwest Groundbreaker Award; and 2025 El Pasoan of the Year. Through her dedication to access, equity, and collaboration, Stephanie continues to create lasting change in the El Paso community and beyond.
Jacquelyn Reza
Jacquelyn Reza has spent the last 11 years pouring her heart into caring for kids & supporting families. She got her start as a toddler teacher and quickly fell in love with helping little ones grow and thrive. Over the years, she’s earned her Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, stepped into leadership roles, and now proudly runs multiple child care centers in El Paso, Texas.
Alongside running her centers, Jacquelyn also gives back to other providers through her non-profit, The Road to Success, where she shares resources, training, and helps build strong community connections. She’s a staunch advocate for early child care and has even spoken in front of committees at the Texas Capitol, encouraging the child care community to come together and push for more funding and support so every child can get the care they deserve. Her goal is simple: bring educators and families together so every child has a bright, healthy start in life.
Ivette Savina
Ivette Savina brings nearly three decades of educational leadership focused on creating comprehensive pathways from early childhood through higher education. In her previous role as Assistant Vice President for Outreach and Student Access at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), she directed the El Paso Collaborative for Academic Excellence, a nationally recognized reform effort that demonstrated how investing in early childhood development creates lasting educational impact.
Recognizing that quality early childhood education is the foundation for all future learning, Mrs. Savina was a founding leader of Early Matters El Paso, helping establish the region's premier coalition for strengthening the early childhood ecosystem. Her leadership at UTEP included managing nearly $30 million in educational programming—from early learning initiatives through college completion programs like GearUp, Upward Bound, and the Early College High School Academic Success Center.
As a founding school principal, and now, educational consultant, Mrs. Savina has witnessed firsthand how early childhood investments transform individual lives and strengthen entire communities. She currently assists with Early Matters El Paso's strategic planning efforts, collaborating to align business, civic, and educational leaders around the economic and social imperative of quality early childhood education.
Dr. Debra Kerney
Dr. Debra Kerney is a 30-year proud Texas public school educator and a native El Pasoan. A member of the Bel Air High School Class of ’91, she began her career in Socorro ISD, where she served as a teacher and a curriculum coach. Ultimately, her road led to serving as campus administrator, Curriculum & Instruction Executive Director, and now as the Associate Superintendent of Canutillo ISD.
A passionate advocate for early childhood education, Dr. Kerney is deeply committed to giving young learners a strong start. She proudly Co‑Chairs Early Matters El Paso, an action network of the El Paso Collaborative for Academic Excellence, where she works alongside community leaders to advance early learning initiatives, strengthen Pre‑K opportunities, and champion policies that ensure every child in El Paso enters school ready to succeed. She has led the opening of the region’s first public Montessori classrooms and champions Pre‑K partnerships that expand access to high‑quality early learning. Her vision for early childhood education is evident in her leadership across the region, including her role in opening two new schools—Gonzalo & Sofia Garcia Elementary and Congressman Silvestre & Carolina Reyes Elementary—that prioritize innovative, student‑centered learning from the earliest grades.
Under her leadership, Canutillo ISD has achieved multiple “A” ratings from the Texas Education Agency and was recognized as an H.E.B. Best Small School District in Texas. Dr. Kerney holds a Ph.D. in Teaching, Learning, and Culture from the University of Texas at El Paso.
Beyond her district leadership and advocacy, Dr. Kerney serves her community as a board member of the United Way of El Paso and a member of the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) advocacy and engagement committees. She is active in her local church, where she is on the board of Daughters of Destiny and teaches in the Destiny Kidz Ministry.
Celebrating her 26th year of marriage, she is a devoted wife and a proud football mom to her teenage son. Through every role, Dr. Kerney’s heart remains with children and families—believing that early childhood education is the foundation for a lifetime of success.
Leila Melendez
Leila Melendez is CEO of Workforce Solutions Borderplex, a non-profit partner of the Texas Workforce Commission. WSB serves job seekers in the 6-county region in Far West Texas by working closely with local businesses, education institutions, economic development agencies, and local governments towards improving the skills, wages, and competitiveness of the Borderplex workforce.
Ms. Melendez is a product of El Paso, having graduated from Bel Air High School, taking courses at EPCC, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix and her MBA from UTEP. She's a proponent of lifelong learning and completed an executive education course in behavioral insights at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

John Fitzpatrick
John Fitzpatrick is a nationally recognized leader in education, workforce development, philanthropy, and public policy, with a distinguished track record of advancing equity and creating high-impact partnerships. With over 25 years of experience, he has built and led mission-driven organizations that deliver measurable outcomes for first-generation and underrepresented students. As President of Ferry Partners, John advises philanthropic and nonprofit leaders nationwide on strategy, partnership development, and scaling systems-level impact.
Previously, John founded and served as Executive Director of Educate Texas, mobilizing cross-sector alliances and securing over $1 billion in public-private investments to drive academic success and opportunity for millions statewide. He has also served as Executive Director of Skillpoint Alliance, Vice President for Education & Workforce at the Austin Chamber of Commerce, and as an elected member of the Austin ISD Board of Trustees. John sits on the boards of SACSCOC, Western Governors University Texas, the Rodel Foundation of Delaware, and Austin EdFund, and was an appointed member of Texas’s JET (Jobs & Education for Texans) Board. Earlier in his career, he served on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., working with both Republicans and Democrats on education, workforce, and trade policy. John launched his career in education as a middle school teacher and coach, holds degrees from Wesleyan University and the LBJ School at UT-Austin, and lives in Austin with his amazing wife and almost perfect twin children.
Patricia Nieto
Patricia Nieto brings a deep commitment to educational equity and culturally grounded instruction in her role of furthering AVANCE’s national curriculum initiatives. Drawing on over two decades of experience in public education, she partners with teams to strengthen program implementation through continuous improvement, inclusive family engagement, and meaningful learning experiences that support school readiness for children and parents alike. Her efforts center on building strong instructional systems that honor culture and the unique strengths of each community.
Born at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, Patricia earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University–College Station and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington. Outside of work, she enjoys crafting, reading, and spending time with her family. Married for over 25 years and a proud mother of two sons, Patricia brings creativity, warmth, and a deep commitment to nurturing both learning and connection in all she does.
Gloria Sepulveda
Implementation Coach, PCEP
Bringing 25 years' experience working with families and children within the Head Start/Early Head Start Program, Gloria has worked in different capacities as a HS Teacher, HS/EHS Center supervisor and as a Family Advocate. After receiving her associate degree in child development in 2002, she dedicated her life to helping families and children succeed. She centralized her work in supporting families by promoting family engagement and connections from the center to the home. She believes, "we all can accomplish success; we just need that extra support that can make us believe that anything is possible."
Gloria began her journey with AVANCE in 2020 as a Parent Educator and a year later became a PCEP Coach. She is currently a PCEP Implementation Coach and a Certified Trainer for the Infant Toddlers Network Institute. She currently supports sites who are implementing Avanzando Juntos. With a passion for helping families, supporting teachers to become highly skilled, and bringing PCEP to new communities, Gloria is well-positioned to help drive the AVANCE mission forward.
Ashley Vazquez-Espinosa
Ashley Vazquez-Espinosa was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and grew up in a loving family environment that shaped her development. She is a wife and mother of two children.
She began her studies at the University of Puerto Rico in 2008 and is currently studying at Keiser University, with plans to graduate in 2026. She has eight years of experience in education, six of them as an Early Childhood Education teacher at AVANCE-Austin.
In 2017, after losing everything in a hurricane, she moved to Austin, where she found new opportunities and renewed her commitment to teaching and child development.
Briseyda Martinez
Briseyda was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and grew up in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. She has been dedicated to early childhood education for over eight years.
She studied two semesters of Pedagogy at the Universidad del Golfo de México and is currently continuing her education to keep growing professionally in this field.
In her free time, she enjoys exploring new parks with her dog Bera, a charming mini Snorkie mix who always joins her with joy and energy.
Briseyda joined AVANCE-Austin in 2022 as an early childhood teacher, driven by her strong belief in the transformative power of early education.
Yara A. Valdés
Yara was born and raised in Cuba, where she trained professionally in Psychology. For eight years, she worked in Social Work within special education, which sparked a deep passion for children and working with families.
In November 2022, Yara and her family arrived in the United States. After a challenging process, they became involved with AVANCE-Austin as a family, giving her the chance to witness firsthand the program’s impact on her youngest son and their family as a whole. That’s when she realized she had found a new home. In front of her was not only a powerful tool that brought positive results for her son but also the fulfillment of professional growth.
Since October 2024, Yara has been part of this great program, committed to continuing to learn and contribute through her experience.
Dr. Shawneen McCarthy
Dr. Shawneen McCarthy, PhD is a licensed clinical neuropsychologist interested in the intersection of brain health, emotional regulation, and mindfulness-based interventions. With nearly two decades of clinical experience, Dr. McCarthy’s work has mostly focused on the assessment and treatment of individuals recovering from brain injury and neurological illnesses. However, her interests extend beyond patient care, including how general behavioral health strategies, including mindfulness, can help anyone cultivate focus, emotional balance, and overall well-being.
Kim Kofron
Kim Kofron is the Senior Director of Education for CHILDREN AT RISK, a statewide advocacy organization in Texas. Her previous roles include being the Executive Director for Texas Association for the Education of Young Children. She has been in Early Childhood for over 30 years, earning a bachelor’s in child development from the University of Illinois and a M.Ed in EC Special Education from the University of Texas. She worked in childcare setting for many years including Teacher, Director, Regional Education Specialist and Manager of Education for a multi-site company.
Diana Infante-De Leon
Doctoral Candidate, University of Texas at San Antonio
Diana is a doctoral candidate with 25 years of teaching experience working with multilingual learners with and without disabilities. She pursues transformative research at UTSA as a third-year doctoral student in the Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching program. Her work intersects language, culture, and special education, focusing on translanguaging and culturally responsive teaching for emergent bilinguals with disabilities. She addresses critical issues like disproportionality in special education, aiming to bridge theory and practice in bilingual special education for marginalized populations with and without disabilities.
Brandi Hernandez
Brandi Hernandez is a proud mother of six boys, three of whom participated in AVANCE’s Early Childhood programs at the Fenley Annex. Today, her sons are continuing their education in bilingual classes at the Fenley Center. With the support of her family and AVANCE, Brandi earned her MBA from Texas A&M University–San Antonio. She credits AVANCE with helping to guide her into becoming the best advocate for her children.
Rosalinda Verdin
Data Coordinator
Rosalinda Verdin is a dedicated data and evaluation professional with over 20 years of experience in nonprofit, program evaluation, and quality assurance. For the past three and a half years, she has served as the Data Coordinator for AVANCE Inc.
Rosalinda brings extensive experience in compliance reporting, and culturally responsive service delivery. Her passion for using data to drive meaningful community impact has made her a trusted resource in the field of nonprofit program evaluation.
On a personal level, Rosalinda is born and raised in San Antonio. She enjoys spending time with her three children and four grandchildren. She also enjoys going on walks and gardening.
Arianni Becerra
Data Coordinator
Arianni Becerra lives in Laredo, TX, and is a graduate of Texas A&M International University with a B.S. in Biology. She previously served as Program Coordinator for the City of Laredo Health Department’s LETS Program, overseeing grants focused on underserved minorities in South Texas. For the past three years, Arianni has worked at AVANCE as a Data Coordinator, where she continues to pursue her passion for supporting and uplifting her community.
When she is not working, Arianni loves hanging out with her family, going to the movies with friends, traveling, and enjoying a great book while relaxing with her cat, Tabitha.
Dr. Sandra Alvear
Director of Research and Evaluation
Dr. Sandra Alvear joined AVANCE in July 2025 as the Director of Research and Evaluation. She is a trained social scientist and education research expert with nearly 14 years of professional experience, including positions with a regional education service center, university think tank, grantmaking organization, and urban school districts. Dr. Alvear's research and data analysis expertise help organizations evaluate the impact of programming, identify evolving interests and needs of communities they serve, and promote engagement. While her training and career have taken her from Los Angeles to Miami, Dr. Alvear has deep roots in Texas. Isabel De la Cruz is the proud mother of 5 children between the ages of 3 and 22. Her youngest, JJ, graduated from AVANCE-San Antonio’s Home-Based Early Head Start program at the Fenley Annex. Isabel and JJ are also 2025 graduates of the AVANCE Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP). PCEP has been a part of her advocacy journey for JJ, and she says that with the support and inclusion from AVANCE, JJ was able to meet goals! She credits AVANCE with helping to guide her into becoming the best advocate for her children.

Marlo is an Audit Partner with Forvis Mazars US in Dallas, Texas. She began her career with KPMG, and after brief stints at Fidelity National and Arum Technologies, she returned to KPMG as a leader in the audit practice. She was an active member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, Women in Business, and serves on the Board of Levine Academy. Marlo’s family was one of the original settlers in New Mexico, and her mother is of both Mexican and Native American heritage. Marlo received her BBA in Accounting from the Red McCombs School of Business and the University of Texas, Austin.
Keith Argueta

Keith’s journey is a testament to his passion for continuous learning and community service. Starting with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Houston, he expanded his expertise by delving into accounting at the University of Houston-Downtown, eventually becoming a Certified Public Accountant in Texas. His diverse background includes leadership roles in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he reached the rank of Sergeant and completed a combat tour in Iraq.
Post-military service, Keith explored opportunities with notable companies like Target, AlliantGroup, Doeren Mayhew, and Stage Stores. However, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his accounting firm in 2013. Specializing in serving the not-for-profit community, Keith brings a wealth of experience in audit and tax services. Beyond his focus on nonprofits, he has also collaborated closely with small to medium-sized businesses and individuals dedicated to community service.
Coming from a Latin American country, Keith deeply values the opportunities the United States has provided him. This appreciation is reflected in his commitment to giving back to the community in various ways. Ryan Ramirez is Head of Infrastructure and Core Digital Technology at ConocoPhillips Company, a role he assumed in July 2023. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Infrastructure and International (Enterprise IT) at Lockheed Martin Corporation. His more than 25 years of IT experience ranges from managing and transforming infrastructure to leading application development for global and enterprise operations. Previously, Ryan served as VP of Infrastructure and Operations at Kimberly Clark and as Sr. Director of Global IT Infrastructure and Operations at Avery Dennison. He also served in a variety of global IT leadership roles for manufacturer and retailer, VF Corporation. Ryan earned his M.B.A., with a concentration in International Business, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Bachelor's degree in Electronic Systems Engineering from ITESM at Monterrey, N.L. Mexico.
Karl Nichols
Chief Development Officer
Karl Nichols is the Chief Development Officer at AVANCE. An experienced management professional with a proven record of leadership in the non-profit sector, Karl brings to AVANCE more than twenty years of experience in educational and healthcare program management, administrative leadership, organizational partnerships, fund development, and civic engagement. In the last ten years, he has distinguished himself as a seasoned fundraiser, with successful achievements in major gifts, annual development planning, corporate giving, special events, and support from large private and public foundations. Prior to joining AVANCE, Karl served as Vice President of Investor Development at E3 Alliance, where, in his first two years, he led a successful $3.4 million donor campaign for a regional middle school teaching and learning initiative. He also expanded corporate and philanthropic sponsorships by 100 percent and launched the organization’s first ever annual fundraising event, Geeks in Boots, that raised over $150k in its first year. During his tenure at E3 Alliance, Karl secured over $40 million in philanthropic support for the organization’s mission.
Karl holds both a BA and an MBA with a concentration in nonprofit management from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 2019, he earned a Certificate in Effective Fundraising from Austin Community College and the nationally recognized Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential. He has served on numerous boards in Austin, including as Vice-President for the Board of Directors for E4 Youth, Board member for Grove Place Partners Community Development Ltd, Executive Board Member for 100 Black Men of Austin Chapter, and a nine-year term on the Executive Board for Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME). Most recently, he served as President of the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater Austin Chapter, the first African American male president in its 40-year history, and presently serves on the Mission Capital and Paloma Lake MUD District boards.

Leslie Villarreal is the proud mother of four children, two of whom are in AVANCE programs. She serves as the Parent Representative for AVANCE Head Start and Early Head Start programs in the Rio Grande Valley. She is currently working toward her associate degree at South Texas College with plans to pursue a bachelor’s in Early Childhood. Leslie is an outgoing mom who enjoys being engaged at her children’s schools and being an active mother for her children.
Jessica Cooper
Family Engagement Instructional Specialist, Pre-K 4 SA
Jessica Cooper serves as the Instructional Specialist for the Family Engagement department at Pre-K 4 SA, an early childhood initiative that offers high-quality instruction to children across San Antonio. In this role, she creates and conducts professional development and training for staff and families, provides coaching and mentorship, and facilitates center-based leadership groups. She has over 17 years of experience in early childhood and dual language education. Her core beliefs are that every child can learn, and that families are children’s first and most important teachers. Jessica is married to Ross Cooper, and they have two children, Lilia and Logan Cooper. Her family is her inspiration, motivation, and life’s purpose.
Jessica earned a B.A. in Fine Arts/Art History from the University of the Incarnate Word, an M.A. in Education from Schreiner University, and is currently a Ph.D. student at UTSA in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching. Her research focus is intergenerational narratives as equitable practices for family engagement in early childhood education.

Brianna Davis is a community builder, storyteller, and passionate advocate for families. She is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Esperanza de Tejas, a nonprofit dedicated to removing barriers and connecting families with the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.
Brianna founded Esperanza de Tejas in 2019 after witnessing firsthand how many families were turned away during moments of crisis. What began as grassroots food, hygiene, and resource distributions during the pandemic has grown into a trusted organization serving families across South Texas through essential services, case management, leadership development, and family-centered programming.
Under her leadership, Esperanza de Tejas has distributed hundreds of thousands of diapers, hygiene products, formula, clothing, and household essentials while helping families access education, healthcare resources, workforce opportunities, and long-term support. Her work focuses on helping families move from crisis to stability and creating pathways for future success.
As a mother of twin sons, including children with autism and sensory needs, Brianna’s personal experiences continue to shape her commitment to inclusion, dignity, and advocacy for all families.
Brianna believes that when families are supported, communities grow stronger, healthier, and full of possibility.
Rebecca Elizondo

Rebecca has more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit and education sectors, with deep expertise in parent education, workforce development, early childhood, and grant and program management. At Any Baby Can, she provides strategic leadership for programs including parent education, early childhood intervention, home visiting, and mental health and case management services. Rebecca is committed to ensuring families receive high-quality, client-centered support that strengthens their wellbeing and long-term stability. Since joining the organization in 2015, she has played a key role in enhancing program quality, expanding services, and advancing a holistic approach to family support.
Prior to Any Baby Can, Rebecca spent a decade at Goodwill Central Texas, where she was instrumental in developing a comprehensive career and educational training system for youth and adults facing barriers to employment.
A native Texan from the Rio Grande Valley, Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Education from Texas State University. She began her nonprofit career as an English as a Second Language teacher and case manager, quickly moving into leadership roles at every organization she has served.
As a dedicated community and family advocate, Rebecca serves on numerous coalitions and nonprofit boards across Central Texas and the state of Texas, working to advance outcomes for children and families who face systemic barriers or have been historically underserved.

Allison Pape
Chief Program Officer
Allison Pape is the Chief Program Officer for AVANCE. As CPO, she is pivotal in carrying out the organization’s mission, overseeing the delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of AVANCE programming and services. Allison brings to AVANCE her passion for education and her wealth of experience in classroom instruction, administration and leadership, and large-scale educational initiatives. Prior to joining AVANCE, Allison was the Innovation Specialist for Seguin ISD, where she supported district-wide initiatives, developed new instructional models to drive school improvement, and facilitated the creation and monitoring of the district’s multi-year strategic plan. She served in administrative and leadership positions for more than a decade, including Academic Dean for A.J. Briesemeister Middle School and Director of Secondary and Advanced Academics for Seguin ISD. Before taking on leadership roles, Allison taught middle and high school classes for eight years. Allison holds bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and southwest studies from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Arts in history from Texas State University. She also earned her teacher certification from the University of Texas at San Antonio and her principal certification from Lamar University.

Liz DeHoyos, is the Early Childhood Education Implementation Lead with AVANCE Inc., bringing over two decades of experience supporting children, families, and educators. She holds a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Texas A&M University–San Antonio.
Liz began her career with AVANCE San Antonio, where she served for 21 years in a variety of roles, within the Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP), as well as Early Head Start and Head Start programs. Her work has focused on strengthening high-quality early learning experiences and building meaningful partnerships with families.
A proud AVANCE PCEP graduate herself, Liz brings both professional expertise and personal experience to her work, grounding her approach in a deep understanding of the communities she serves. She is passionate about the work she does for the organization.
Elizabeth Diaz

Elizabeth Díaz is a Mental Health and Development Specialist with a master’s degree in Mindfulness and a strong professional commitment to promoting children’s well‑being, while also recognizing the critical importance of supporting the adults responsible for their care. She has more than twenty years of experience in the field of child development and is a co‑author of Libros de Superpoderes para Niñas (Superpowers Books for Girls). Her professional approach integrates scientific knowledge, empathy, and applied mindfulness, grounded in the understanding that emotional regulation is a collaborative process and that well‑being is fostered through meaningful support.
Rachel Garibay
PCEP Center Director, AVANCE San Antonio
Rachel Garibay-Posada is a dedicated early childhood professional and leader in San Antonio, Texas, with over 20 years of experience working with children and families. She currently serves as the Center Director for PCEP Fenley at AVANCE San Antonio, where she has worked for 14 years supporting family engagement and early learning.
Rachel is also a bilingual Professional Development Specialist for infant, toddler, and preschool educators with the CDA Council, a role she has held for 15 years. In addition, she is a trainer with TECPDS, specializing in family engagement. She is graduating with her bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Studies from Tarleton State University on May 8 and believes that learning something new every day builds knowledge and growth.
She began her career as a parent volunteer at her daughter’s Head Start program, which sparked her passion for early childhood education. Rachel has been with her husband for 27 years, and they were married on July 3, 2024, in Las Vegas. She is a proud mother of two—Angela (26) and Rodrigo (24)—and a loving grandmother to three granddaughters, ages 6, 5, and 4, who bring her great joy.
Cynthia Landeros

Cynthia Landeros is an early childhood education professional with over 20 years of experience supporting children, families, and educators. She holds a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Texas A&M University–San Antonio and possesses a Bilingual Certification as a Child Development Associate (CDA) Specialist. She is also a registered TECPDS trainer with expertise in Infant, Toddler, and Birth-to-Five development.
Ms. Landeros has served with AVANCE for 19 years in progressive leadership roles, including Child Development Teacher, Home Visitor, Supervisor of Children’s Services, and Center Director. Her work is grounded in a strong commitment to advancing high-quality early learning, strengthening family engagement, and empowering early childhood professionals through training and leadership development
Raysha Diaz
Home Educator
Originally from Puerto Rico, Raysha Diaz holds a bachelor's degree in Nursing and has a strong passion for serving families. For the past three years, she has served as a Home Visitor with AVANCE-Austin, providing support, guidance, and encouragement to parents and caregivers to promote the holistic development of young children.
Her background in nursing, combined with her experience working directly with families, allows her to bring a compassionate, empathetic approach centered on family well-being. As a wife and mother of a four-year-old, Raysha is deeply committed to strengthening parenting, early learning, and community support.
Ana Garcia
Early Childhood Teacher
Ana Garcia was born in Mexico and has lived in Texas for the past 18 years. After completing high school and attending college, she paused her education to focus on raising her family. One of her long-term goals is to return to school and earn a bachelor's degree in early childhood education.
In 2018, Ana joined AVANCE as a participant alongside her daughter, an experience that she says transformed her life in ways she never expected. Through the program, she gained resources, support, and guidance that helped her grow as a parent and better support her daughter’s development and school readiness.
In March 2022, Ana joined the AVANCE team as an Early Childhood Teacher and earned her Texas School Ready certification. She continues to grow personally and professionally through her work with children and families. She believes every child is unique and learns at their own pace, and she strives to create a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment where children feel safe to explore, learn, and thrive.
Outside of work, Ana enjoys spending time with her two children and cheering them on at soccer practices and games.
Laura Huerta Migus

Laura Huerta Migus serves as the Director of Fellowship Alumni Engagement and National Activation & Impact at Ascend at the Aspen Institute. She is focused on strategically supporting, organizing, and activating the growing Ascend Fellows Alumni community to amplify and advance issue-focused action. Laura will lead the development of new engagement models to deepen alumni commitment to the sustainability of Ascend Fellowship program.
For more than twenty years, Laura worked at a national level to advance museums’ ability to nurture and support a healthy museum workforce and better serve all audiences. This work was accomplished through leadership appointments at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Association of Children’s Museums (ACM), and the Association of Science-Technology Centers, Inc. (ASTC). She is a noted speaker and author on topics of equity and audience-focused museum practice for institutions including the Board of Science Education of the National Academies of Sciences, the U.S. Play Coalition, and various peer-reviewed texts. She has also spearheaded the launch of a number of groundbreaking public-private partnership initiatives, including the National Museum Survey and Museums for All.
In 2018, Huerta Migus was named as an Ascend Fellow of the Aspen Institute, and in 2016, she was recognized as a Champion of Change for Summer Opportunity by the White House. She holds degrees from Texas A&M and Saint Joseph’s University.
Anisa Lazaro

Anisa Lazaro has been happily married for 26 years and is the proud mother of three children and two beautifulgrandchildren. She has dedicated more than 12 years to working with children, helping support their growth, development, and success. For the past four years, Anisa has been part of AVANCE, where she continues to make a positive impact on families and children in her community.
Anisa attended Mountain View College and earned her TSR certification through AVANCE. She is passionate about helping children achieve their goals and believes in creating encouraging and supportive learning environments. Known as a dedicated learner, helpful colleague, and strong team worker, Anisa values collaboration and lifelong learning in both her personal and professional life.
Dulce S. Loera Luna
Parent Educator
Dulce Loera was born in Mexico, where from a very young age she discovered her passion for the well-being and development of children. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in child development and has more than 10 years of experience in the areas of early childhood development, maternal and perinatal health, and breastfeeding support, accompanying families through some of the most important stages of their lives.
In 2022, she began her journey at AVANCE as an Early Childhood Development Teacher. She currently serves as a Parent Educator, carrying out her work with commitment, empathy, and a deep vocation for service.
Throughout her career, Dulce has distinguished herself through her passion for the health, safety, and well-being of children, but especially through her commitment to supporting mothers, firmly believing that everything begins with them. As a mother of three, she closely understands the challenges, sacrifices, and emotions that come with motherhood, an experience that has allowed her to genuinely connect with the families she serves.
In addition, she feels a deep sense of pride seeing more fathers enroll in the programs and show interest in becoming actively involved in their children’s early development, strengthening family bonds, and creating a stronger future for their families.
In her personal life, she finds her greatest motivation in her husband and children, who inspire her daily life to grow, learn, and give her very best. She firmly believes that parents are the most important example in their children’s lives and that every effort made today leaves a positive impact on future generations.

Lorena Rodriguez

Originally from Colombia, Lorena Rodriguez built her professional foundation as a Public Accountant before moving to the United States in 2021. Committed to lifelong learning, she continued her education by earning a diploma in Child Care and Development.
Lorena has been married for more than 21 years and is the mother of a teenage son, who, she says, keeps her active, curious, and practicing emotional intelligence every day. Her family shares their home with a dog who fills everything with joy. She enjoys spending time outdoors, meeting new people, and embracing new experiences. She believes life is enriched by maintaining curiosity and continuing to learn at every stage.
For the past two years, Lorena has served as a Home Visitor with AVANCE. She values the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with families, recognizing that each home visit offers a unique story, a new perspective, and an opportunity to learn alongside those she serves. Her work is grounded in empathy, connection, and a genuine commitment to supporting children and families.
Dr. Flávio Cunha

Flávio Cunha is a Professor of Economics. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 2007 and taught at the University of Pennsylvania before joining the economics faculty at Rice. His areas of expertise are labor economics with special emphasis on human capital formation. He was recently awarded the Econometric Society's Frisch Medal for "Estimating the Technology of Cognitive and Noncognitive Skill Formation," a paper published in Econometrica that he wrote with Dr. James Heckman and Dr. Susanne M. Schennach.
Professor Cunha's most recent research program focuses on the causes and consequences of inequality and poverty, especially the quantification of degree to which labor income inequality is the result of the preexisting heterogeneity present across workers before they enter the labor market versus how much is due to labor market shocks. He is also studying the importance of investments in cognitive and noncognitive skills in explaining the heterogeneity that determines labor market inequality. His on-going research project, the Philadelphia Human Development Study, aims to understand the role played by parental expectations about the returns to investing in children affect actual investment decisions.
Patricia Nieto

Patricia Nieto serves as Senior Director of Programs and Strategy, where she leads efforts to strengthen program quality, curriculum alignment, and strategic implementation. Patricia brings a deep commitment to educational equity and culturally grounded instruction. Her leadership centers on building systems that honor family voice, community strengths, and cultural identity, advancing AVANCE’s mission to walk alongside families in achieving social and economic justice.
Born at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, Patricia earned her bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University–College Station and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington. Outside of work, she enjoys crafting, reading, and spending time with her family. Married for over 25 years and a proud mother of two sons, Patricia brings a deep commitment to nurturing both learning and connection in all she does.
Rosa Vargas
Early Childhood Teacher
Originally from Colima, Mexico, Rosa Angélica Vargas came to the United States at a young age with dreams of building a brighter future. After living in New Hampshire, she relocated to Texas, where she discovered AVANCE and found her passion for early childhood education.
Rosa began her journey with AVANCE as a volunteer, where her dedication to children and families quickly became evident. With the organization's support, she continued her professional development and earned her Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
In 2015, Rosa participated in the Texas School Ready program, strengthening her knowledge of early childhood education and earning additional certifications that have enhanced her work in the classroom. She is proud to be part of a two-generation program that empowers children and families to build stronger futures together.
Outside of work, Rosa enjoys spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren.
Olivia Lopez
Parent Educator
Olivia Lopez is a Parent Educator, wife, mother of three, and proud grandmother of four. She is passionate about serving children and families and has been actively involved in her church community for more than 20 years, where she has experienced meaningful personal and spiritual growth.
Her journey with AVANCE began two decades ago when she graduated from the program alongside her youngest daughter. At the time, she had completed only the sixth grade, but hearing the words, "AVANCE doesn't end here; it's just beginning," inspired her to continue her education.
The following year, Olivia enrolled in GED and English classes before beginning her career in child development. She later pursued an associate degree in Child Development, discovering along the way that her commitment to education inspired her own children to pursue higher education. Today, all three of her children have earned university degrees, and two have completed master's degrees.
Olivia later served as a lead teacher before becoming a Parent Educator six years ago. She also began pursuing a bachelor's degree in Education but temporarily paused her studies to care for her mother. Today, she is preparing to continue that journey and remains committed to lifelong learning. Olivia believes that education transforms lives, opens doors, and leaves a legacy that extends across generations.
Maria Gomez

María Gomez has served as an Early Childhood Teacher with AVANCE-North Texas for the past two years, an experience that has significantly shaped both her personal and professional growth. Her journey began as an AVANCE participant, where the program inspired her to pursue new opportunities and ultimately discover her passion for early childhood education.
Dedicated to helping young children reach their full potential, María is committed to creating a classroom where every child happy, motivated, and—above all—safe to express themselves, learn, and grow. She is currently pursuing a degree in Education (Pedagogy) and remains committed to expanding her knowledge to provide high-quality, individualized learning experiences for every child.
Originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, María brings patience, dedication, and enthusiasm to her work. She believes early childhood education is more than a profession—it is a calling—and finds great joy in supporting children's growth and celebrating their successes.
Jenny Castro
Executive Director, Empower House
Jenny Castro is Executive Director for Empower House. She holds a BA in English and is passionate about co-creating spaces for healing and wholeness, especially for Black and Brown women and girls, which has been the throughline of her meandering career. She is blessed to be family together with her spouse, Jake, and their three remarkable children, Joaquín, Frida, and Mireya. Jenny enjoys the outdoors, natural water, a good book, and a good cup of coffee.
Susana Oyoque
Toy Instructor
Susana Oyoque is a Toymaker and Home Visitor in the Rio Grande Valley. She is a preschool educator and has a Child Development Associate. She is a proud AVANCE graduate and has been with AVANCE for 23 years. She was a former Child Fund International Liaison and Supervisor, and has also served various roles throughout the years including health education promoter, home visitor, toymaker, and van driver. Susana enjoys sharing her knowledge and loves her current role as a Toymaker and Home Visitor.
Maddie Glover
Director of Program Impact and Strategy, Any Baby Can
Maddie joined Any Baby Can as the Director of Data, Reporting and Evaluation in 2021 and became Director of Program Impact and Strategy in 2026. She has spent the last 7 years in Austin’s nonprofit sector with experience in foster care, domestic/sexual violence prevention and care, homeless prevention work and parenting programs.
Maddie graduated with her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Arkansas. After working in direct care with foster children, she pursued her Master of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin with a concentration in Administration and Policy Practice to work in non-profit data management and program evaluation. Maddie completed her master level internship at Any Baby Can where she first fell in love with the mission and work Any Baby can does for the community.
Although born and raised in Hong Kong, Maddie calls Austin home and enjoys the ever-growing food scene, cooking and baking, and being outdoors: camping, kayaking, or hitting the trails with her daughter Lyla, her husband and her two rescue dogs. She is honored to be back at Any Baby Can supporting and uplifting families in our community.
Nwando Clyburn
Director of Learning Foundations, E3 Alliance
Nwando has over 20 years of experience in education, with a career spanning classroom instruction, literacy leadership, educator development, and cross-sector collaboration. Her work has focused on advancing literacy outcomes, supporting educators, and strengthening opportunities for young learners and their families, including serving as the Reading Academies Director at the Texas Education Agency. She brings deep expertise in the Science of Teaching Reading, early literacy, and early childhood education.
Currently, Nwando serves as the Director of Learning Foundations at E3 Alliance, where she leads efforts to strengthen early childhood systems and improve outcomes for children and families across Central Texas. She also provides leadership for the Greater Austin Reading Coalition (GARC), working with community partners to advance literacy, strengthen family engagement, and drive collective impact across the region.
Nwando earned a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Prairie View A&M University and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Literacy Studies from The University of Texas at Arlington.
Aura Camacho
Virtual Parent-Home Educator
Originally from Venezuela, Aura Camacho has been part of AVANCE-Austin for the past five years as a Virtual Parent-Home Educator. Her relationship with AVANCE began before joining the organization professionally, when she participated in the program as a mother. Having experienced AVANCE as both a participant and an educator gives Aura a unique perspective and helps her better understand the needs and expectations of families during home visits.
Aura is a Civil Engineer with a background in education, and much of her professional journey has centered on teaching and working directly with people. For more than 12 years, she has taught and supported both children and adults, experiences that have strengthened her commitment to listening, guiding, and helping others in practical and approachable ways.
Paula Mendoza
Paula Mendoza is the Founder and CEO of Possible Missions, Inc., a Texas-based company she established in 2001 with just $100 in the bank. What began as a project management firm has evolved into a procurement solutions company serving clients through partnerships with leading suppliers including Fisher Scientific, Ecolab, and Medline Industries. In 2018, she founded Pos Mis, Inc., focusing on project management services for higher education institutions, research laboratories, medical facilities, and government agencies. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Paula is deeply committed to supporting educational opportunities for others. She has established endowments at Lone Star College and the University of Houston in honor of her mother, as well as a scholarship through the East End Chamber in memory of her father. Paula earned her MBA and Graduate Certificate in Leadership from the University of Houston–Downtown, where she also received her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.
Elva Delia Garcia
Parent Educator
Elva Delia was born in Tamaulipas, Mexico, and has called Texas home for the past 21 years. As one of eight siblings, she had the opportunity to continue her education and earned a bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering. However, her true dream has always been to become a teacher.
In 2015, Elva graduated from AVANCE’s Parent-Child Education Program alongside her youngest daughter, who was only 11 months old at the time. Years later, she decided to pursue her passion for teaching and began working at AVANCE as an Early Childhood Education Teacher. After one year in that role, she became a Parent Educator and is now entering her third year. She is deeply passionate about the work she does and the opportunity to support parents, children, and families as they learn and grow together.
Outside of work, Elva enjoys spending quality time with her family, baking sweet treats, and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Dr. Lizzy Pérez is the founder of Lizzy Pérez, LLC, an ICF Professional Certified Coach, Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator, academic researcher, and leadership speaker whose work centers courage, emotional intelligence, perfectionism, psychological safety, communication, and wellbeing.
Before launching her firm, she spent ten years teaching and coaching and ten years serving in school leadership, including as a principal. Her customized workshops have reached more than 15,000 participants, and she has supported more than 4,000 leaders through Dare to Lead™ experiences across sectors and leadership levels.
Her facilitation style combines research, lived experience, humor, direct conversation, and practice. Participants leave with language they can use, a clearer understanding of their own patterns, and a next step that belongs in real life rather than a notebook that disappears after the conference.
Luciana Garcia

Luciana “Lucy” Garcia is a proud Rio Grande Valley native, born and raised in Santa Rosa, Texas. For the past five years, she has served as a dedicated Member Advocate with Aetna Better Health of Texas. As the mother of a two-year-old son with autism, Lucy has been inspired by her family’s own journey to help and support others. She is currently pursuing a degree in pastry arts and hopes to continue her education to fulfill her goal of becoming a nurse. Outside of work and school, Lucy enjoys baking and finding ways to support her community.
